01 — Overview
## What steel fencing actually is — and when to commission it.

### What it is
Steel fencing is a run of welded steel panels or bar-and-post fencing, set into the ground or fixed to a base, forming a boundary that combines security with visibility and durability.

### Who it's for
Homeowners in Swindon finishing a frontage or securing a garden, developers on new-build boundaries, trade clients securing yards, and commercial clients enclosing plant, car parks and delivery areas.

### When it's needed
When timber fencing has rotted, when a boundary needs proper security, or when the aesthetic calls for a bespoke steel run rather than an off-the-shelf panel.

### Why professional help matters
A fence is the daily boundary of the property. Bad steel fencing bows, drops, rusts and — worst of all — invites the very thing it was supposed to keep out. Good steel fencing lasts.

02 — What happens if you get it wrong
## The four failures we see when steel fencing is done cheaply.

### Panels that bow within a year
Undersized bar and posts, or wrong post spacing, and panels flex under wind load. Once bowed, they don't come back straight.

### Posts that lean
Posts set into insufficient concrete — or straight into soil — walk in the ground. The whole run tips over time.

### Rust at the base
The bottom 100mm of an external fence is the wettest, dirtiest part. Without proper priming and finish there, the fence rusts from the ground up.

### Trip-friendly design
Bar spacing and top-rail height that allows climbing turns a fence into a ladder. Bespoke fabrication solves this at design stage.

03 — Our process
## From first call to signed-off installation.

- Step 1

### Free site survey
We walk the boundary, measure the run, check levels and confirm ground/substrate conditions.

- Step 2

### Design & written quote
Panel style, post spacing, finish and gate integrations spelled out. Written quote and guarantee.

- Step 3

### Workshop fabrication
Panels cut, welded, ground back and finished — primed and topcoated ready for external life.

- Step 4

### Installation
Posts set in concrete or bolted to base plates, panels hung and levelled, matching gates hung to the fence line.

- Step 5

### Sign-off & guarantee
We walk the finished line with you, check plumb and level, and hand over the written guarantee.

04 — Benefits
## What you actually get when you commission this from SRN.

### Stays straight
Correctly sized bar and post spacing means panels don't bow under wind load.

### Stays put
Posts set into properly sized foundations don't walk.

### Weather-hardened
Primed and finished for external life — especially at the vulnerable base.

### Matching gates as standard
Fence and gates fabricated to the same style so the line reads as one.

### Long service life
Correctly finished steel fencing lasts far beyond timber alternatives.

### Guarantee on fabrication & install
In writing, in your quote.

05 — In detail
## Materials, methods, variations — the full picture.
This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for.

### Fencing styles
Vertical-bar residential railings (the classic period-style boundary), spear-topped railings for security, modern flat-bar architectural fencing, industrial mesh-and-frame for yards, and matching bespoke to complement existing gates or railings on the property.

### Posts & foundations
Steel posts concreted into ground with a foundation sized to soil and panel height, hollow-section posts bolted to a base plate on hardstanding, or masonry pillars with fixed steel infill panels. Post spacing is designed for panel size and wind exposure — not standardised regardless of site.

### Security-focused fencing
For yards and premises we fabricate to increase resistance to climbing and forced entry — spear tops, welded top-rail returns, close bar spacing and heavy-duty gate integrations. Not full high-security PAS 68 (that's a specialist product) but genuinely secure boundary work.

### Finishes
The right finish depends on exposure and aesthetic — we specify the appropriate protective system for the environment. Matt black is the current dominant colour on residential steel fencing; traditional properties often go gloss black or bronze-black.

### Applications
Front-boundary railings on residential properties, side and rear garden boundaries, yard and premises perimeters, commercial car-park boundaries, and matching-run fencing to newly installed gates. Regularly fabricated and installed across Swindon, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.

06 — FAQ
## Straight answers to the questions we're asked most.
Not answered here?

07765 923 407Call the workshop — you'll get a fabricator, not a call centre.

How much does steel fencing cost per metre?+Bespoke residential steel fencing typically starts in the low hundreds per metre installed, with security and traditional-style runs costing more. Every quote is free and written.

How long does a steel fencing install take?+Domestic runs typically fabricate in 3–5 weeks and install within a few days on site, depending on length and ground conditions.

Do you install matching gates with the fencing?+Yes — matching pedestrian and driveway gates are fabricated as part of the same commission for a consistent line.

Can you match my existing railings?+Yes — we regularly match period-style existing runs, and can design new sections to blend with older sections.

How long does steel fencing last outside?+A correctly specified and finished steel fence lasts decades with only cosmetic maintenance.

Do you offer a guarantee?+Yes — a written guarantee on fabrication and installation.

Do you work on trade sites and yards?+Yes. Roughly half our work is trade. Our team is CSCS-carded and for site work.

Do you install steel fencing across Wiltshire?+Yes — across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.
