It's a coordinated trade job that has to slot into the wider build programme. ### Who it's for Builders and main contractors on loft conversions, extensions, side-return infills, new-builds and light-industrial frames; and homeowners in Swindon project-managing their own renovation who need a supply-and-install package rather than parts. ### When it's needed When steel has to be installed as part of a live build — not just delivered to a yard and forgotten. Typical trigger points are demolition-day support, first-fix structural steel, and mezzanine or portal-frame erection. ### Why professional help matters Steel that turns up right but is fitted wrong is still a failure. Poor bearing onto padstones, unbolted connections, missing packers, and cold field welds cause Building Control fails, plaster cracks and structural risk. Installing what you fabricated closes the loop and removes the finger-pointing. 02 — What happens if you get it wrong ## The four failures we see when structural steel installation is done cheaply. ### Steel arrives without the fitter Supply-only fabricators dump beams in a yard and vanish. If anything's off, the site stops. ### Wrong padstone or pocket detail Steel arriving to find the padstone in the wrong place — or too small — burns half a day. Coordinating fabrication with the ground works avoids it. ### Site welding done badly Field welds are harder than workshop welds. A weld into an in-situ column has to be right first time — and by someone who welds every day. ### No paperwork for sign-off Building Control asks for evidence that structural steel was fabricated properly. Without paperwork behind, sign-off drags. 03 — Our process ## From first call to signed-off installation. 1. Step 1 ### Site survey & drawing review We visit site, read the engineer's calcs and connection details, and coordinate with the builder on pocket, padstone and access. 2. Step 2 ### Written quote for supply & install Beam-by-beam fabrication cost, delivery, install method, crane or manual handling, and guarantee — all in writing. 3. Step 3 ### Delivery & installation Delivered to site in Swindon or across the region on the date agreed with the builder. Lifted into place, seated on padstones or pockets, bolted or welded to the engineer's detail. 4. Step 4 ### Sign-off & handover Steelwork left level, plumb, connected and Building Control-ready. Paperwork handed over. This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for. ### Typical installation packages Loft-conversion goalpost frames and ridge beams, single-storey rear extension opening-up beams and columns, double-storey extension structural steel, side-return infill steels, knock-through beams between reception rooms, garage-conversion lintels and support beams, new-build residential structural frames, and light-industrial portal frames. ### Site methods Manual handling with strong-backs and skates for domestic beams that will fit through the property, telehandler or hi-ab delivery where access allows, and mobile crane where beam size or site conditions require. Access and lifting method is decided at survey — not on install day. ### Connections in situ Bolted flange-plate and end-plate connections, welded flange connections, cleat and fin-plate bolted joints, and welded stiffeners where the engineer's detail calls for them. Site welding done by the same fabricator who welded the workshop connections. ### Coordination with the wider trade package Structural steel install is a coordinated job — bearings, padstones, pockets and openings all need to be right before the steel arrives. We survey the site, coordinate with the builder, and confirm padstone position and size before fabrication starts. ### Working with builders and main contractors Roughly half of our work is for trade clients — builders, architects and main contractors — across Swindon, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.
