Skilled Trade experience Building Regs Compliant install Free Quote & site survey 01 — Overview ## What structural steelwork & beams actually is — and when to commission it. ### What it is Structural steelwork covers the load-bearing steel that holds a building up: RSJs (rolled steel joists), universal beams (UB), universal columns (UC), lintels, portal frames, goalpost frames and connecting brackets. It's the steel Building Control cares about — the steel with a calc sheet behind it. ### Who it's for Builders and main contractors handling loft conversions, rear extensions, side-return knock-throughs and new-builds; architects and structural engineers specifying steel for a client; and homeowners in Swindon doing a Building Regs-approved renovation who need a fabricator who won't hold up the programme. ### When it's needed Any time you remove a load-bearing wall, open up a floor, add a storey, span an opening beyond the reach of a lintel, or build a portal frame. This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for. ### Sections we fabricate Universal Beams (UB), Universal Columns (UC), Parallel Flange Channels (PFC), Rolled Steel Joists (RSJs), Rectangular and Square Hollow Sections (RHS/SHS), Circular Hollow Sections (CHS), angle, flat bar, plate and rebar. Sizes from small lintel-replacement beams through to full portal-frame primary members. ### Connections & fittings Welded end-plates, bolted flange plates, cleats, fin plates, base plates, gusset plates, stiffeners and web doublers. Padstone brackets and pocket plates prepared to your engineer's detail. ### Typical applications Loft conversions (goalpost frames and ridge beams), single- and double-storey rear extensions (opening-up beams and columns), side-return infills, knock-throughs between reception rooms, garage conversions, new-build residential frames, agricultural and light-industrial portal frames, mezzanine floors, plant-room supports and roof steels. ### Residential vs commercial Residential structural steel is typically small-run, tight-access work with a homeowner and builder on site.
